What MentorPower did for Tina Drew

Ms. Tina Drew is an African American young woman who grew up in the projects of Trenton, New Jersey. She participated in MentorPower for four years. As a senior at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, she has a grade average of 3.6. She plays (Bass) in and travels with the University Jazz Band. Her major is Engineering /Physics and she has a minor in music. Tina continues to stay in touch and visit when she is home. We are very proud of her.

MentorPower has been a great asset in my life.  It has assisted me throughout high school and college.  Not only was I involved in the research during the scholastic year, but I also participated in the PMI Summer Science Research Program and College Summit.

The PMI Program enabled me to explore my interest in science. College Summit introduced me to college life and essay writing. Because of MentorPower, I was also able to participate in the Energy Research Undergraduate Laboratory Fellowship at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory the summer prior to my sophomore year at UMES.

Mentor Power has guided me through various areas of my life. When I was a freshman in high school, I was shy and timid. I was not a good public speaker. However, thanks to the guidance of Bambe Cross, Maureen Quinn, Linda Coles and other people involved in Mentor Power, I am a confidant female, sociable person, and an eloquent speaker.

When I was in a state of depression during high school, Ms. Quinn was there to snap me back to reality. During this time I continuously showed to school late, skipped assignments, and missed appointments. I was a malfunctioning "powerhouse". Ms. Quinn scolded me, in love, and told me that I needed to get myself together. This encounter with Ms. Quinn was essential for me getting my life back on track and enabling me to output my potential energy.

In both of these situations, I could have given up hope if MentorPower had not guided me in the right direction.  I know that other students feel the same way about the program.  I represent one of the hundreds of powerhouses that MentorPower has saved from becoming a cancerous block in the community.  As an African-American female from a four-person (now five-person) household with an average income of $25,000, the odds were against me for successfully completing high school and attending college.  MentorPower helped me defy these odds.

The investments that MentorPower has made in the lives of youth in Trenton, Princeton, and Lawrence is priceless. This non-profit organization provides a loving, educational, and relaxed environment for students at no cost. The financial support that your organization chooses to give will be greatly appreciated by MentorPower, the youth, and the Community.
